BC Conservative Leaders Criticize $6 Billion Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project Overrun

John Rustad, leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, and Elenore Sturko, MLA for Surrey South and the party’s candidate for Surrey-Cloverdale, have voiced strong criticism following the recent announcement of significant cost increases and delays in the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project.

The project’s estimated cost has ballooned to $6 billion, marking a 50% increase from the original $3.94 billion budget. Additionally, the completion date has been pushed back to late 2029, a year later than the previously revised timeline.

Rustad condemned the NDP government, calling the $2 billion overrun a “disgrace” and attributing it to government mismanagement. He accused the government of failing in its responsibilities, asserting, “British Columbians should be outraged. The NDP has failed our province on every front—from affordability to accountability.”

Sturko echoed these concerns, emphasizing the impact on Surrey-Cloverdale residents. She described the situation as a “betrayal of public trust,” criticizing the delays, broken promises, and escalating costs as evidence of poor leadership. Sturko called for more effective governance that puts citizens ahead of “political games.”

Both Rustad and Sturko are demanding a full audit of the project and immediate government accountability, questioning how costs spiraled and why taxpayers are left to cover the overruns.
