Seventeen-year-old Summer McIntosh from Toronto has made an unforgettable mark at the Paris Summer Olympics, becoming Canada’s first athlete to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games. Her outstanding performances have established her as one of the nation’s brightest young swimmers.

McIntosh began her impressive campaign by earning a silver medal in the 400-metre freestyle on July 27. She then claimed gold in the 400-metre individual medley on July 29, followed by another gold in the 200-metre butterfly on August 1. Her final gold came in the 200-metre individual medley on August 3, where she set a new Olympic record with a time of 2:06.56.

Her victories are particularly notable as they continue a family tradition of excellence in swimming. Her mother, Jill McIntosh, also competed in the 200-metre butterfly at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. McIntosh’s remarkable achievements also match the four-medal record set by Canadian swimmer Penny Oleksiak in Rio.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau personally congratulated McIntosh, praising her historic accomplishments and highlighting her as a symbol of Canadian athletic success.
